By default the offset comes from the place's time zone history (IANA tzdb 2026e with backzone). It's printed on the map when Sky details (under Caption) is on.

Your map is calculated in your browser. Nothing you type leaves this page.

What a star map shows

A star map is a calculated chart of the sky above a place at a chosen time. It shows catalog stars, constellations, the Moon and planets above the horizon. Their positions come from astronomical calculations for your date, time and place. Colors, brightness, landscapes and decorative effects are styled for the artwork.

A stylized sky chart, not a photograph. Stars are shown as if the sky were dark; actual visibility depends on local conditions.

How it works

  1. Choose the moment. Enter a date and, if you know it, a time. No time? We use 9 PM for a wedding, anniversary, new baby or birthday, and noon for everything else, by the local clock, and say so on the map.
  2. Choose a place. Start typing a city and pick it from the list. The sky shifts with latitude, so the place matters.
  3. Choose a style. Midnight Atlas, Cream Atlas, Painted Horizon or Celestial Plate: the same sky, framed four different ways.
  4. Add your words. A title, names, a short line of your own and a featured star.
  5. Choose how you want it. Save an image for your screen, or order a printable file, poster, framed print, canvas print, aluminum print, ornament, puzzle, blanket or pillow cover from our Etsy shop.

Good to know

  • Everything is computed in your browser. Nothing you enter into the map leaves this page.
  • Stars are drawn as if the sky were dark, so a daytime moment shows the Sun among them. In the far north or south, 9 PM can still be daylight.
  • Positions are astronomical facts for the date, time and place you give. They are not a prediction.
